ERC Starting Grant for NUCLEATE Investigator Prof. Julian Grünewald

Prof. Julian Grünewald receives a prestigious ERC Starting Grant for his project ONE2MANY - aiming to make gene editing therapies more scalable and therefore more accessible for patients.

People

In 2025, a bespoke CRISPR therapy was successfully used in a single patient, marking a milestone for gene editing. Yet a key challenge remains: how can these therapies become scalable and accessible to many patients? Julian Grünewald’s ONE2MANY project addresses this question for inherited heart diseases, which affect around 18 million people worldwide. Using AI, his team will develop new gene editing tools capable of correcting groups of LMNA mutations or replacing the entire gene. The project also aims to improve delivery to the heart through novel lipid nanoparticle technologies, paving the way for scalable treatments for inherited cardiac disorders and beyond.
